Dr. Kavita Patel warned that the longer people wait to vaccinate, “the more it poses a risk across the board for those of us who are vaccinated.”
“It’s not just that vaccinations work, we have to vaccinate the whole world, and the more people are unvaccinated or remain unvaccinated, the virus replicates. When it replicates, it mutates and the more efficient it gets with mutations, that is “where you can get variants like Delta,” said Patel, a former political advisor to the Obama administration.
The Delta variant is the dominant Covid-19 strain in the USA and, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accounts for more than half of all new cases nationwide. The World Health Organization described the Delta variant as the “fastest and fittest” variant yet, and data shows it could be up to 60% more contagious than the original Alpha variant.
Patel appeared on CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” in March to speak about herd immunity and worried what the future would bring if millions of people were left unvaccinated.
“Six months fast-forward and we unfortunately have millions of Americans who could still be affected,” said Patel on Wednesday.
The Senior Medical Advisor to the White House, Dr. Anthony Fauci told NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday that approximately 99.2% of the most recent Covid deaths in the United States have been unvaccinated. Patel echoed Fauci, expressing concerns that unvaccinated clusters will become breeding grounds for the next variant of Covid.
