“YPCCC Helps Fb Debunk Myths About Local weather Change” – What’s Up With It?

Reposted by The GelbspanFiles.com

The situation regarding the arrival of the Yale Cavalry-style Communication on Climate Change Program (YPCCC) to save us all from the disinformation about global warming on Facebook calls for a comparison to a comical scene from a famous old movie in which the man held dejectedly at gunpoint notes the unexpected arrival of the completely corrupt police superintendent.

The highlights of the announcement on February 24, 2021 are as follows: ……………… ..

… YPCCC plays a key role in Facebook’s new initiative to combat the spread of misinformation about climate change on its platform.

… Facebook also announced a new “myth-busting” unit that debunks six common myths about climate change …

“Misinformation about climate change preceded the internet, but it has been amplified significantly in our new digital world. This new myth-shattering section of the Facebook Climate Science Information Center can help raise public awareness and understanding of climate change around the world, “he said Anthony Leiserowitz, Senior Scientist and Director of the YPCCC.

Leiserowitz, along with John Cook from the George Mason University Center for Climate Communication and Sander van der Linden, Director of the University of Cambridge’s Social Decision-Making Lab, worked with Facebook to develop evidence-based rebuttals of climate misinformation on their platform.

The moment I read about this announcement, I remembered the above comical scene in the 1985 Chevy Chase film “Fletch” because I had highlighted two of the names above.

Copied from my October 9, 2019 blog post “If Nobody Discovers Our Serious Problem We Should Be Fine,” a title that sums up the appearance problem well here:

… The Western Fuels Association, a coal cooperative, spent half a million dollars on a misinformation campaign to “reposition global warming as a theory (not a fact).”

Where does John Cook’s clickable “Misinformation Campaign” link go? A PDF file of an entire book chapter by Naomi Oreskes, whose quote on page 139 for “Repositioning Global Warming” leads to a place where no one will ever find these memos – arguably complete disinformation on her part and John Cook’s part to maintain it. Who else does Oreskes cite as the source for this memo phrase? Ross yellow chip.

Why is a reference to the “Repositioning Global Warming” memos a form of disinformation regarding the existence of fossil fuel industry disinformation campaigns? Because the memos are worthless as evidence of this; Western Fuels never requested this memo set and never operated under his direction.

You could hardly ask for a better example of disinformation than a blatantly false accusation designed to distract the public from seeing flaws in scientific narratives, even composed of cherry-picked data.

By the way, John Cook is still a Facebook friend of Gelbspan to this day and confirms my longstanding observation of prominent people who accuse skeptical climatologists of industrial corruption of being three degrees or less apart from Ross Gelbspan.

Sander van der Linden is not one of Gelbspan’s Facebook friends. It also emerges from the YPCCC announcement above that he is just a separate person who is now working with Leiserowitz and Cook.

Not quite. In the “The Consensus Handbook” published in 2018, Sander van der Linden receives the second bill after his top author …… John Cook. And what can be seen on page 8 of the PDF file? The identical disinformation sentence above about Western fuels and the “Repositioning Global Warming” memos, citing Oreskes’ book chapter on page 139.

Perhaps van der Linden could gain some distance from himself on this problem by saying something about it Not-Western Fuels Memos were written by John Cook. But he will not be able to work his way out of the problem of co-authoring a book on global warming with the decidedly anti-scientific title “The Consensus Handbook”.

From the end of my contribution on February 17, 2021, I repeated how the late Dr. S. Fred Singer emphasized: “Consensus is not a science and science is not a consensus …Science is not a show of hands“And as Lord Christopher Monckton emphasized in a detailed answer to John Cook of the WUWT,” consensus “- also known as” argumentum ad populum “- is rightly viewed as unacceptable because the consensus view – and whatever” science “may be the consensus opinion justifies on – may or may not be correct, and the mere fact that there is a consensus says nothing about the correctness of the consensus opinion or the reasons for this opinion. … Science is not carried out by consensus. “

Facebook has already done bulk cleanups of information / user accounts that it considers to be untruthful. Their threats to clean up what they consider to be misinformation have increased recently. How long will it be before posts and accounts that do not conform to the orthodoxy of global warming preached by the YPCCC disappear? ……… .. Which, in case no one has noticed, is essentially the same as Al Gore’s.

How long will it be before other outlets of various kinds follow Facebook’s lead?
