TNW backstage immerses within the debate about sustainable motorsport

This week on TNW backstage we go into the quick lane – and directly into the climate debate.

In the last episode of the podcast we will resume a splitting bet on sustainable motorsport: Extreme E, the Reinelectric Racing series.

The events had SUVs raced by some of the most fragile ecosystems in the planet. Followers said they had raised awareness of environmental problems, while critics called it a classic case of Greenwashing.

At the TNW conference of last year we were led by Ali Russell through the twists and twists, at that time the managing director of Extreme E. In his lecture, Russell explained his vision for the fight against climate change through Hochoktane's racing. He threw it both as a test site for EV innovation and as a global platform for environmental representation.

The results? Mixed. While Extreme E in EV performance and gender -specific equity broke new territory, critics have despised his sustainability claims.

At the TNW Conference 2025, we will continue to unpack the tension between sustainability and innovation – especially in the future of mobility. Here is a sample of what is on the agenda:

  • The street ahead: drive innovation and sustainability with the former F1 driver Robert Doornbos
  • Green growth: Financing and scaling companies for a sustainable future with SkyTree and VS particles
  • Disorder of the food chain: Agritech role in feeding the future with an open food chain and Lumo Labs
  • Innovation on a scale with Ferraris Chief Research and Development Officer

As far as extreme E is concerned, the series has now been renamed the first hydrogen-powered off-road racing championship. Would you like to hear what led to the pivot point? Then listen to Spotify, on our dedicated podcast website or via the Media Player at the end of this article.
