Despite the ongoing government shutdown, the Labor Department will reassign staff to work on a key report on consumer inflation, CNBC has learned.
The department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics will “immediately resume work” on consumer price index data for September, a White House official said. The report will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 24, nine days after the original date, according to the BLS.
The ministry originally paused work on the CPI report – which examines a broad basket of goods and services for price changes over time – because of its decommissioning plan, the official said. However, the Social Security Administration requires third quarter CPI data to calculate and publish annual cost of living adjustments before November 1st.
Other BLS data releases, including the nonfarm payrolls report, have not been released as originally intended since the federal government shutdown due to a funding shortfall. The Senate failed Thursday for the seventh time to pass funding legislation that would have ended the shutdown that began last week.
Bloomberg News first reported that the BLS was recalling its employees to work on the CPI data.

Correction: The Social Security Administration requires third quarter CPI data to calculate and publish annual cost of living adjustments before November 1st. A previous version misstated the organization name.
