The actual motive why a 4-day working week makes folks happier of their work

It is not exactly surprising that the employees support themselves to move to a four -day working week.

In the past five years, hundreds of companies have piloted a four-day, 32-hour working week without reducing wages at around 8,700 workers around the world. People experienced less burnout, stress and fear and better spiritual and physical health. The employees rated their work-life equilibrium higher and even grew the business gains.

There are two important factors for the workers' thrust, says Juliet Schor, author, economist, sociologist and senior researcher of the 4 -Tay experiments.

One is, of course, that people have more time for their families, friends, sleep, hobbies, health and communities, Schor writes in her latest book “Four Days a week”.

However, the second factor is that the workers are happier, even if they are on the clock. Simply put: In the four -day week, people feel much more effective at work, and that generally makes them happier.

“People just feel so much better”

The experimental participants themselves reported that they were more productive than ever before they were drawn to a shortened week. When workers and teams before the task of doing their usual amount of work in a shorter time, they found ways to shorten work, to optimize processes and to determine which work was most important, writes Schor.

Some said they felt more stress to limit everything, although these situations were the exception, Schor writes.

Apart from the maintenance of productivity, “people just feel so much better,” says Schor that CNBC manages. “They feel their work and life and they are not stressed. They feel restored when they come to work on Monday morning. They feel more striving to do the work. They feel that they can do it.”

If the workers feel that they are good in their job, they feel good overall, and that is built into their personal life.

“These productivity bodies that you get in order to feel so good in terms of your quality of work, which has a great positive impact on your general well -being, which we never expected,” says Schor.

A new contract between bosses and workers

The four -day working week could also make people feel better with regard to their work because it signals a new contract between himself and your employer.

The typical five-hour working week has been the national standard since the 1940s. If companies introduce a shorter working week without a reduction in wages, flexibility can be used as an exclusive or reward.

It signals that management is willing to give control of how people structure their time, says Schor, especially if part of the goal is to explicitly improve the well -being of the employees.

The step can also strengthen the teams when colleagues join together to work intelligently in a shorter time.

The four -day week “makes everyone super motivated for the implementation [process] Changes that are not easy, “said Jon Leland, who previously helped Kickstarter with a four -day pilot for the working week.

“It makes the missions really high because they not only win these efficiency gains for themselves, but also for everyone else around them,” said Leland in their book.

“This accountability towards colleagues is an important part of why people are willing to try to make additional efforts to find efficiency, become desperate and do the hard work,” Schor writes. “You develop more team spirit.”
