Georgia House threatens a tax break for Delta after CEO issues new voting restrictions

The Republican-controlled house in Georgia decided on Wednesday to lift a major tax break for Delta Air Lines to punish its CEO’s public criticism of the state’s controversial new legal clause on access to ballot papers.

The state Senate didn’t take the measure until lawmakers adjourned the year and made them dead for that year. The threat, however, underscores the potential political backlash businesses could face if they resisted efforts to restrict voting.

Suffrage activists are calling on big corporations to oppose electoral laws under consideration in major political battlefields, where Republicans are putting new electoral barriers after a record turnout in 2020 to help the Democrats, the White House and the Senate majority to win.

Delta will no doubt welcome these efforts to end its fossil fuel tax breaks. Reducing CO2 emissions is in line with Delta’s public commitment to a low-carbon future.

Delta’s ambitious carbon neutral plan balances immediate action and long-term investments on the path to zero-impact aviation

Delta Air Lines’ bold commitment to carbon neutrality from March 2020 is swiftly implemented through immediate action coupled with long-term investments to combat climate change.

“Connecting the world and protecting our environment for future generations are not mutually exclusive,” said Ed Bastian, Delta CEO. “Travelers shouldn’t have to choose between seeing the world and saving the world. We still need to take immediate action today and can’t wait for future solutions to become a reality. While there are many avenues to be carbon neutral, Delta has chosen to make an impact today and invest in a future where aviation itself becomes cleaner for the world around us. “

In the short term, Delta intends to achieve carbon neutrality by directly reducing emissions through fleet and operational efficiency and addressing remaining emissions by investing in carbon offset projects that preserve, protect and expand forests. Delta’s sustainability glossary contains definitions of sustainability terms and details on Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

The Georgia House of Representatives, seeking to remove Delta’s fuel tax exemption, also complies with Greenpeace’s call for an end to fossil fuel subsidies. The Greenpeace definition of a fossil fuel grant includes tax breaks for fossil fuels such as those given by the Delta exemption.

Imagine if other states followed Georgia’s leadership? Delta would soon have the irrefutable claim to be America’s climate leader in the sky, demonstrating its undeniable commitment to reducing carbon emissions by paying more fuel taxes per gallon than any other major airline.

Of course, other airlines don’t want to be left behind. Delta’s competitors would quickly follow Delta’s courageous climate leadership and demand an end to their own fossil fuel tax exemptions. They would demand the right to show solidarity with Delta’s high-cost pledge for a low-carbon future.

Too often, unfortunately, WUWT has to report on the differences of opinion and conflicts that arise between the participants in the climate debate. I’m sure you will all appreciate the warm, fuzzy feeling I get when I write about a win / win situation like this which everyone gets what they say they want.
