Many US Census Bureau databases were not available to the public on Thursday, whereby the users were informed that Access was “prohibited” when they tried to download common data records.
Several data experts announced CNBC that they had received the same error message for files that are routinely available.
“My employees tried numerous economic publications and we could not access them through a census,” said Maurine Haver, founder of Haver Analytics. The company is a leading global data provider, including the CNBC.
Data experts were able to download some files via various problem bypass.
Some of the data records that were not available for CNBC late Thursday contain information about the demography of voters, population changes by state and small companies.
Economists were concerned that there could be a major impact.
“When was the last time that the census only set the publication of data? Two data experts from the institute were also able to download data from census.gov.
“It indicates that there may be internal printing not to publish any data that we rely on and we have to find out whether that is true,” said Horrigan.
Some databases were still accessible to the public. It is unclear whether the restricted data can be attributed to a technical problem or as part of the changes in terms of information and communication under President Donald Trump.
Erica Groshen, former commissioner of the American Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Obama government, said that the data on the census data were of crucial importance for decision-making throughout the government and business.
“Eval policy, budgetary policy and investment decisions will all be worse if the data quality decreases or the reports are delayed or absent,” Groshen told CNBC.
The Census Bureau did not answer a comment on Thursday afternoon when asked by CNBC.
The Census Bureau website was one of several state websites that briefly darkened last Friday after the command of the White House to remove a certain language about diversity, justice and inclusion.
