Polar Bear Habitat in Canada within the first week of June sees an enlargement of essential polynyas – Watts Up With That?

Winds mainly cause the apparent “breaking up” of sea ice in late spring through the expansion of persistent polynya and bank ledges. This year, critical open water areas in Canada (important feeding areas for polar bears) are developing in most areas as in previous years, although there are large variations from year to year.
