From NASA
As the leading agency that monitors and understands environmental changes on earth, NASA has joined the National Climate Task Force. President Joe Biden issued an executive order on January 27th that first set out the details of the task force.
The government’s climate change agenda outlines how to put climate at the heart of the country’s foreign policy and national security, and promotes a government-wide approach to tackling climate change.
Since the launch of the first weather satellite in 1960, the television and infrared observation satellite (TIROS-1), NASA has exploited space to study the earth. It is still the only space agency in the world that offers comprehensive research on the Blue Planet in order to analyze and understand the processes involved.
“Climate change is one of the most pressing problems we face today,” said Gavin Schmidt, NASA’s acting chief climate advisor and director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. “Given our unique ability to observe the planet from space and the long-term data sets we have been able to compile, NASA is in a great position to make policy decisions in the current administration and beyond.”
Working with our government partners, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the United States Geological Survey, NASA is responsible for building the country’s Earth observation resources in civil space. More than two dozen NASA satellites measure the heights of oceans and inland waterways, clouds and precipitation, soil moisture, carbon dioxide and more. The data collected will help improve weather forecasts, inform agricultural practices, and assist decision-makers at all levels of government and in the private sector.
In addition to Earth observation satellites, NASA is developing predictive modeling technologies to examine policy-specific scenarios and conduct research that will contribute to government-wide sustainability efforts and understanding of climate change. To reduce the environmental impact of aviation, NASA is researching energy-efficient aircraft that use technologies such as lightweight construction, transformative aerodynamics and hybrid electric propulsion.
Through its long-term observations of the earth, insights into the changing world of the planet, efforts to contribute to sustainable aviation and promoting partnerships with the private sector, NASA is already ready to assist the task force in addressing the most pressing problems of climate change.
