LA Instances publishes Beijing-funded propaganda, hides China’s large coal consumption and emissions – what’s incorrect?

Guest essay by Larry Hamlin

The LA Times regularly publishes a paid supplement on its Sunday edition called China Watch, which is referred to by other news outlets as Beijing-funded propaganda with the latest edition of China Watch shown below.

This LA Times practice has been addressed in other news publications, as mentioned in the following Daily Caller article, which states that the Times has received over $ 650,000 for publishing this propaganda since July 2020.

This latest edition of China Watch goes into China’s wind power efforts, but doesn’t mention China’s massive and growing use of coal fuel, making this country the leading global emissions producer, accounting for 29% of all global CO2 emissions as of 2019.

The subject of China’s massive emissions is never addressed by the LA Times, which is constantly seeking further emissions reductions by the US, while completely and completely by the US’s massive and growing emissions, which have increased by over 3.7 billion tons since 2005 ignore and hide reduced its emissions by over 900 million tons over the same period.

China’s emissions climbed dramatically since 2005 as it increased its coal consumption by over 47% during that period in the US reduced its coal consumption by just over 50%.

The CO2 reductions in the US were mainly achieved through the increased use of lower cost, higher efficiency and lower emissions natural gas obtained through fracking to replace the higher emission fuel.

According to the EIA, increased use of natural gas has accounted for around 62% of US emissions reductions since 2005. EIA data shows that between 2005 and 2019, the cumulative CO2 reductions in the US from substituting natural gas for fuel instead of high-emission coal fuel resulted in 3.4 billion tons in CO2 reduction.

The LA Times has never addressed this tremendous benefit of reducing CO2 emissions from natural gas, and in fact endorses the incompetent war by Biden and the Democratic Party on energy and emissions against using natural gas with lower costs, higher efficiency and lower emissions, obtained through the use of fracking technology.

The tremendous benefits of using natural gas to reduce CO2 emissions are shown in the US Emissions Reduction Table shown below. Even more important is the fact that the reduction of CO2 emissions in the US can continue in the future due to the increased use of natural gas, since the US has not increased global emissions at all since 2005 and at the same time a reduction of almost 1 billion tons compared to their peak reach CO2 emissions.

Hiding the hugely beneficial results of fuel substitution and emissions reduction achieved by natural gas, the LA Times calls for Americans to pay trillions in increased costs to further reduce emissions, so that China can lower its emissions as a result of its ever-increasing use fossil fuels can continue to increase enormously.

The Times dishonestly claims that the US is forced to resort to costly, unreliable renewable energy sources, making the absurd argument that these reductions will “fight” climate change while realizing that China and the United States are causing global emissions other countries will continue to rise Developing countries increased energy and emissions growth.

China’s huge growth in CO2 emissions (measured in billions of tons) is shown in the graph below. The reduction in US emissions since 2005 is clearly demonstrated by the fact that China’s increased emissions easily devour these reductions. China’s emissions in 2019 are almost double those of the US

China’s increased coal consumption and rising emissions dominate not only emissions results relative to the US, but also emissions results relative to total world emissions, as shown below (measured in billions of tons of CO2), with China and India’s steadily growing emissions all control Global emissions have been increasing since 2005.

China, being part of the Asia / Pacific region of the world, consumes staggering amounts of coal fuel, as shown in the graph below, with China accounting for about 67% of that region’s total coal fuel consumption. The Asia / Pacific region dominates the use of coal fuels, consuming over 77% of total global coal consumption.

China consumes 2.5 times more coal than all 37 industrialized countries in the world (OECD countries include the US and EU), consumes more than 7.2 times more coal than the US, and sources around 58% of its own total energy consumption from coal (compared to US coal consumption of about 12% of total energy) and accounts for more than 51% of all coal fuel used worldwide.

These massive coal fuel consumption figures are comparable to the fact that China only uses wind and sun for about 4% of its total energy needs, while the US uses wind and sun for about 5.2% of its total energy consumption.

China’s electricity relies on coal for about 65% of its total electricity, while the US only uses about 24% of its total electricity with coal. This offers further opportunities to increase natural gas consumption and reduce future coal consumption. The electricity demand in the Asia / Pacific region is largely derived from the use of coal (figure below) compared to the North American electricity demand, which is mainly based on lower costs, higher efficiency and lower-emission natural gases as well as nuclear power.

China is using its renewable energy advocacy campaign as political propaganda to try to hide its massive and growing use of coal and other fossil fuels. The LA Times contributes to this propaganda fiction by not addressing China and the dominance of other developing countries in global carbon emissions from the use of coal and other fossil fuels, and the enormous benefits the US has in the Emission reductions that are achieved through the increased use of natural substances hides gas.

Not only do China and India (and other developing countries) dominate these countries’ current global energy and emissions consumption, as the leaders of the world’s developing countries have clearly announced plans for further growth in the use of coal and other fossil fuels in the future, with the LA Times this hides this clearly defined reality.

In the pandemic year 2020 China actually increased Coal consumption and production of 53% of the world’s coal-fired power plants were more than nine percentage points higher than five years ago, and coal burning increased 1.7 percent.

In addition, China added 38.4 GW of new coal projects in 2020, more than three times the amount built by the rest of the world, and approved 46.1 GW of new coal projects more than the combined total of the last three years.

Additionally, China has taken on the role of promoting increased use of coal fuels in the future by working with other developing countries (see below) and providing financial, engineering, construction and operational services in support of these projects.

Coal accounts for 56 percent of power generation in Indonesia, 34.3 percent in Vietnam and 29.3 percent in Cambodia.

India is also increasing its use of coal to fuel the growth of its energy sector, as mentioned in the following article.

As the article notes, India is conducting commercial auctions for coal mines, with 67 mines up for auction nationwide to support future increased coal power plants, 36.6 GW of new power plants to be built, and another 29.3 GW of coal power plants planned for the pipeline.

These actions and plans reflect that these nations will grow their economies and significantly increase their fossil fuel generation capacities to support these growth goals, as shown in the graphic below. This shows that energy use will increase significantly in these growing developing countries while remaining stable in the US and EU.

Biden, the Democratic Party, the LA Times, and other ill-informed climate alarmists are out of touch with the global energy and emissions realities as their incompetent plans dictate that the US destroy its economy and cut emissions here at the cost of trillions of dollars in developing countries be able to further significantly increase their consumption of fossil energy and the resulting emissions and at the same time significantly increase their economies.
