The start of an Instagram function in which the geolocation data of the users were described on Thursday by Social Media users of social media users.

Meta On Wednesday, the Instagram card tool made his debut and set up the function as “up to date” with friends by sharing your “last active location”. The tool resembles the Snapchat -Snap card function with which people can see where their friends post from.

Although Meta said in a blog post that “the location release of the feature is not,” said several social media users in posts that they feared that this was not the case.

“I cannot believe that Instagram has launched a card function that reveals the location of everyone without warning,” said a user who was published on threads, the META microblogging service.

Another threads user said that she was concerned that bad actors could take advantage of the card function by spying on others.

“Instagram, who randomly updates her app to take up a card function without actually alerting people, is so incredibly dangerous and actively ensured that your perpetrator cannot follow your location online … why,” said the user in a thread post.

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri replied to the complaints about threads and denied the idea that the card function exposes people's locations against their will.

“We check everything, but so far it looks mostly as if people are confused and assume that they can see themselves on the menu when opening, other people can see them too,” wrote Mosseri on Thursday. “We still check everything to ensure that nobody shares the location without expressly deciding to what, by the way, requires a double consent of design (we ask you to confirm after you want to say that you want to share).”

However, some Instagram users claimed that their locations were shared even though they did not decide to use the card function.

“Mine was discontinued and shared with everyone in the app,” said a user in a threads post. “My location settings on my phone for IG were never set to. So it was not automatically switched off for me.

A META spokesman repeated Mosseri's comments in a statement and said: “Instagram card is switched off by default, and your live location is only shared when you switch it on.”

“If you do this, only people who trace you back – or a private, custom list you choose can see your location,” said the spokesman.
