If geoengineering were ever attempted on a significant scale, it would likely lead to crop failures and global famine. A study from 2018 found that plants need sunlight. Despite this rather unsettling disadvantage, the scientists are pushing ahead with their experiments.
Balloon test flight plan under attack over solar geoengineering fears
Swedish environmental groups warn against a test flight, which could be a first step towards the introduction of a potentially “dangerous, unpredictable and uncontrollable” technology
A planned scientific balloon flight in northern Sweden has generated resistance from environmental groups over fears that it could cause solar geengineering to cool the earth and combat the climate crisis by mimicking the effects of a major volcanic eruption.
In June, a team of Harvard scientists is planning to launch a balloon at high altitude from Kiruna, Lapland, to test whether it can carry equipment for a future small-scale experiment with radiation-reflecting particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.
An independent advisory board will decide whether the balloon test flight should be approved by February 15. Swedish environmental groups have written to the government and the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) to express their opposition.
In the Guardian’s letters, organizations such as the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, Greenpeace Sweden and Friends of the Earth Sweden said that while the balloon flight planned for June will not involve the release of particles, the first step in that direction could be the introduction of a potentially ” dangerous, unpredictable and uncontrollable “technology.

This isn’t the first time an unpopular green technology has taken on a life of its own. In 2007/08, the global infatuation with biofuel subsidies sparked widespread hunger riots in poor countries.
