Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott joins the London-based World Warming Coverage Basis

Essay by Eric Worrall

I was in the room when former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said ‘I’m a climate skeptic’ at the last Australian CPAC, to wild applause from the audience. He joins a growing list of politicians, academics and environmental activists who have recognized that there is no risk of catastrophic climate change and believe that as temperatures rise, civilization is perfectly capable of adapting , as it must do with the severe climate changes that have occurred over the past 11,000 years. Former Prime Minister Abbott joins over 45 academics and policymakers at the GWPF.

Tony Abbott, former Australian Prime Minister, joins the GWPF
press release

LONDON, February 6 – Tony Abbott, former Prime Minister of Australia, has joined the Board of Trustees of the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF).

Tony Abbott was Prime Minister of Australia from 2013 to 2015 and Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2019. He is Director of the Ramsay Center for Western Civilisation, Council Member of the Australian War Memorial and Advisor to the UK Board of Trade. He is a patron of several charities including Soldier On, the International Sports Promotion Society and Worldwide Support for Development.

dr Jerome Booth, Chair of the GWPF, said:

“I am delighted to welcome Tony Abbott to the Board of Directors of the Global Warming Policy Foundation. As a former Prime Minister, he brings a global perspective and political insight at the highest level. He will continue to support our goals and support our efforts to foster a culture of debate, respect and scrutiny in policy areas currently dominated by intolerance, high emotions, moral thinking and confusion.”

Tony Abbott said:

“I am pleased to join the GWPF because it consistently brings a realistic touch to the climate debate. We all want to save the only planet we have, but this should not be done by means that impoverish poorer people in richer countries and hold poorer countries back. In countries like Australia, climate policies are currently having an impact on making electricity less affordable and less reliable than on noticeably cooling the planet. We need more real science and less groupthink in this debate – here the GWPF has been a commendably consistent, albeit lonely, voice.”

One thing I found fascinating about the last CPAC is a senior conservative who looked like a centrist on stage but privately admitted he wanted Tony Abbott back.

I wonder how many other Australian Conservative politicians yearn for the days when they could show their face at CPAC without being booed by the public for their weak political positions?

Appeasement just looks dishonest. Honesty is a rare and prized quality in politics.

If Tony Abbott ever throws his hat in the ring again, the green extremists currently ruling Australia have a real fight ahead of them. The last time Australia introduced a carbon tax, Tony Abbott delivered a landslide victory for the Conservatives over the incumbent Green Labor coalition.
