Dutch Neobank Bunq improves the US enlargement, information for brand spanking new license

Dutch Neobank Bunq, the second largest digital bank in Europe, is preparing to expand through the Atlantic. The FinTech company applied for a broker dealer license from US supervisory authorities and ended the first phase of its two-stage expansion strategy.

The license enables Bunq to offer American users investment options – shares, ETFs and investment funds – in addition to cash management tools. This includes functions such as automatic transfers and MasterCard bast cards.

However, Bunq does not dive to the deep end. With this phases approach, the company can collect data and user feedback real data before the following applies later this year to a complete US banking license, said Bunq.

A US banking license would have Bunq work like a fully regulated American bank. It would be able to offer checking accounts and savings accounts, to keep deposits directly and to spend loans.

Ali Niknam, founder and CEO of Bunq, who will share the history of his company at the TNW conference on June 20, said the step with his mission is to serve a growing basis of “location -independent” users: digital nomads, expats, removed employees and global entrepreneurs.

Like most neobanks, Bunq has no physical branches. Instead, customers make their banking completely online.

“Our users live an international lifestyle and also need a bank that is also global,” said Niknam. “Today's step brings us closer to make this vision reality.”

Bunq, based in Amsterdam, has already recorded fast growth in Europe, where it now counts 17 million users. The company also reported a profit of € 85.3 million for 2024 and marked the second year of profitability in a row and an increase of 65% compared to the previous year.

Bunq said it is planning to invest these profits in its international expansion, with the United States an important goal.
