Former House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday put former President Donald Trump responsible for what happened in the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 riot.
“Like everyone else, I watched Donald Trump make these exaggerated claims about the election results every day after the election,” Boehner told CNBC in a recorded interview with The News with Shepard Smith. “So Donald Trump actually bears some of the blame for what happened on January 6th.”
The Capitol’s rupture that day delayed the formal counting of the congressional vote, which Joe Biden eventually certified as the 2020 election winner. At a rally outside the White House earlier in the day, Trump urged supporters to march to the Capitol to protest the election result amid baseless allegations of widespread fraud.
Boehner’s comments come less than a week after Senate Republicans blocked a law that would set up an independent commission to investigate the attack. The former House Speaker noted that “it is difficult to get both parties to agree to a fair commission”. However, he added on Jan. 6 that “it is imperative for the American people to know what happened”.
Boehner – who served as spokesman from 2011 to 2015 – also admitted that while there is a divide between pro- and anti-Trump Republicans, Democrats are equally divided.
“Democrats have the same problems between traditional Democrats and left progressives, so it is a feature of modern politics to have an essentially two-party system,” Boehner said.
A recent Gallup poll found that the number of Americans who identify as Republicans or Independents leading to the GOP fell to 40% in the first quarter of 2021. The number of Democrats or Independents leaning to the left reached 49%. The nine percentage point lead is the largest Democratic lead Gallup has measured since 2012.
Host Shepard Smith also asked Boehner about the most recent series of cyberattacks against the United States. The former House Speaker said he believed President Joe Biden should “make it very clear that” [Vladimir] Putin that enough is enough and that he either takes action or we will. “
The hacker collective REvil is behind the cyber attack on JBS, a source told CNBC. This caused JBS, the largest meat processor in the world, to cease operations. The cyber attack forced the company to temporarily cease operations at slaughterhouses and processing plants in the United States
JBS reported the organized cyberattack on its information systems just three weeks after a ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline – the largest fuel pipeline in the US – paralyzed fuel supplies in the southeastern US for several days. Russia called DarkSide carried out the attack on the Colonial Pipeline, who paid $ 5 million to restore services.
Boehner noted that the Russian hackers are non-state actors, “but we know what is happening in Russia – nobody acts without the blessing from above, so Putin must do something about it.”
