Depop makes use of AI to create clothes affords from only one picture

Fashion app Depop has unveiled new AI gear from the company's tech store. The secondhand marketplace can now create an entire listing from a single photo.

The feature launched today is designed to speed up sales. Users simply need to upload their image and click “Generate Description.”

Image recognition and GenAI then create the listing description. The system also adds various item attributes, from category to color to brand. Every detail includes Depop's signature tone, hashtags and images.

Last month, TNW revealed that Depop is working with an AI startup to analyze trends, with the UK government providing funding for the project.

Depop has also integrated voice and image models into the platform's listings, search, and recommendations.

Rafe Colburn, the company's chief technology and product officer, told TNW that Depop is now using AI and machine learning “across our entire marketplace.”

“Resale inventory is typically unstructured, user-generated content,” he said. “AI allows us to address that and close the gap with retail by giving us ways to understand and showcase products that were previously only available to traditional retailers.”

Colburn hopes the technology can also lead to a change in consumer behavior by favoring resale over retail.
