Maxime Boudreault is the 2022 Canadian Strongest Man (CSM) competition champion. It is that Strongman’s first ever CSM title. This year’s strength training competition was held August 25-27 in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Canada.
Joining Boudreault on the podium were 2021 champion Gabriel Rheaume and Wesley Derwinsky in second and third. Rheaume finished second, just a point clear of Derwinsky. Meanwhile, Derwinsky stayed on the podium for a second straight year after a second-place finish in 2021.

Event One – Squat Lift
The opening Squat Lift event required athletes to squat for as many reps as possible using a 311-kilogram (685.5-pound) piece of equipment. Kelly Branton placed ahead of the rest of the field 11 successful replays and notched the event win.

The dumbbells in this time medley ranged in weight from 78 to 124 kilograms (172 to 273.5 pounds). Neither competitor successfully lifted all five barbells within the 90-second time limit, but put on strong performances Simon Pratte and Boudreault gave them first place straight away.

Event Three – Atlas Stones
The traditional Atlas Stones arrived a little earlier during CSM 2022 in a change from the usual strongman format where the stones are often the final event of a competition. The five stones ranged in weight from 141 to 191 kilograms (311 to 421 pounds). Boudreault light work of stones as if made the only competitor to lift all five for event victory.

The Max Deadlift is another fundamental and self-explanatory event in strongman. Whoever could deadlift the most weight for one rep would be the winner. There was a four-way tie at the top with no outright winner.

Event Five – Log Lift
The log lift of this contest progressed to whoever could press the most weight overhead in one rep. Boudreault won one more event than that only athlete to successfully press 188 kilograms (414.5 pounds)..

Event Six – Deadlift Grip
The deadlift reappeared in the latter part of the 2022 CSM, this time challenging athletes to hold a 701-pound (318-kilogram) deadlift in the locked-out position for as long as possible. Joey Lavallée’s last time beat Pratte less than four tenths of a second for the win.

Event Seven – Back Raise
The back raise required athletes to position themselves under an apparatus with their backs essentially parallel to the floor and the load supported across their hips. Then lift the device from this position. Tyler Sigurdson was the winner with an amazing weight more than 43 kilograms heavier than the closest competitor.

Eighth Event – Bag Over Bar
The eight sacks in the Bag Over Bar final ranged from 20 to 32 kilograms (44 to 70.5 pounds). The bar the athletes had to throw the sacks over was 4.57 meters (15 feet) long and they had 75 seconds to reach the finish line. Derwinsky ousted Boudreault firstbut both were the only ones to throw all eight pockets successfully.

Boudreault’s win at the 2022 CSM ends a solid spring and summer with results in 2022. The 31-year-old has finished in the top five in four straight competitions. A first win in his native Canada is probably the most satisfying for the top contender.
