New rules for testing and using self -driving vehicles are on the way in the state of California.
The California DMV announced on Friday that it is now applying for public comments on the proposed regulations that for self -driving vehicles from light robotaxis such as Waymo's to difficult driverless trucks such as those from Plus.ai.
In a declaration sent to CNBC by email, a spokesman for the California DMV said that the proposed regulations “offer the most comprehensive rules of the country for the operation of autonomous vehicles and underline the commitment of the DMV to improve public security, the promotion of innovations and the establishment of a robust framework for AV technology examination and application.”
With his engineering center in Palo Alto, Elon Musk's Tesla I promised to deliver a self -driving vehicle and a driverless chassis for years. However, Tesla has not yet granted any permits for the use of driverless vehicles in California, and the company has not yet sold any vehicles that are considered safe without one person behind the steering wheel.
The Tesla shares still rose by about 10% on Friday and continued to recover from a recent fall that was taken from President Donald Trump's global tariff by the uncertainty about the global tariff.
Competitors including alphabetWaymo -Own Waymo, AmazonThe possession of Zoox and the Chinese AV company Weride have all received a higher level of permits in California, and Waymo is already operating a Robotaxi service in Los Angeles and in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The state's vehicle security authority has published the regulations on the Autonomous Vehicles website and began to accept the public comments for a period of 45 days, which ends June 9, 2025. Then she plans a public hearing before the introduction of new regulations.
For the proposed regulation, driverless vehicle manufacturers would have to receive permission to test with a human security driver on board and then complete a certain number of test miles. You would then have to receive further permission for driverless tests and a final approval for the use of driverless vehicles in California.

The new proposed rules would also enable autonomous trucks (with a weight of 10,001 pounds or more) to be tested on California public roads. You would also request all AV manufacturers in the state to comply with new data report requirements and meet the standards of the state for driverless vehicle interactions with first aiders.
California's updated regulations were announced after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration specifies to relax an order in which the car manufacturers have to report data on collisions, while the drivers use their partially automatic or advanced automated driving systems.
In 2022, the California DMV Tesla sued and said that the company had involved fraudulent marketing and advertising practices in terms of its autopilot and complete self-driving systems.
