Greta Thunberg threatens to boycott the COP26 local weather convention in Glasgow – what’s improper with that?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Greta is outraged that rich countries are giving priority to taking care of their own people instead of sharing their Covid-19 vaccines with poor countries.

  • “Of course I would like to attend COP26 in Glasgow. But not if not everyone can participate on the same terms, ”Thunberg tweeted on Friday.
  • Thurberg said inequality was already at the heart of the climate crisis, adding that it would be “undemocratic” if people were not vaccinated and could travel to the summit to be equally represented.

LONDON – Adolescent climate activist Greta Thunberg has announced that she will not attend the high-profile United Nations climate summit if current vaccination trends continue.

Thunberg tweeted Friday morning in response to a BBC report saying she had “no plans” to attend the summit known as COP26, due to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in November.

“Of course I would like to attend COP26 in Glasgow. But not if not everyone can participate on the same terms, ”tweeted Thunberg.

She argued that many countries are vaccinating “healthy young people” against Covid-19 at the expense of risk groups and frontline workers in other countries.

Thurberg said inequality was already at the heart of the climate crisis, adding that it would be “undemocratic” if people were not vaccinated and could travel to the summit to be equally represented.

“Vaccine nationalism will not solve the pandemic,” said Thunberg, arguing that “global problems need global solutions.”

Greta has no consideration for the millions of workers in rich countries whose taxes were paid for the vaccines she wants to redistribute.

Of course, if poor countries were rich they could buy their own vaccines. What is preventing poor countries from getting rich?

The best economic analysis of global poverty I’ve read is PJ O’Rourke’s economic essay, Eat the Rich. The evidence that O’Rourke provides suggests that poor countries are poor because they are led by kleptocrats.

You may think some of the politicians who rule the United States are bad and there are worrying trends, but the picture O’Rourke painted of the poorest nations was of rulers who never give green urges the slightest chance to grow. In the worst places in the world, as soon as they see an accumulation of wealth, the local thugs in charge come in and steal it, shoot everyone and break everything in their way, leaving nothing but rubble and slaughter. People in poor countries quickly learn the hard way that there is no point in attracting attention by trying to improve their own lives because they are not allowed to keep the fruits of their labor. Those who are ambitious in such places emigrate or join the thugs. Or both.

Asia learned to get rich because the organs of government-sanctioned theft were in disarray for a short time after the sudden collapse of the Japanese Empire. When British government employee Sir John Cowperthwaite traveled to Hong Kong after World War II, after the Hong Kong people had fought for themselves for a few months, he was so fascinated by the beauty of watching poor people run their own lives for the rest of him His career has been devoted to preventing the British government from interfering with the Hong Kong economy. Cowperthwaite’s policy of strict non-interference produced the Asian miracle – an accumulation of wealth so rapid that Hong Kong is still richer per capita than Britain to this day.

People in insanely disadvantaged circumstances can accumulate wealth quickly if they can get the thieves off their backs. A few years ago I read the heartwarming story of Mesfin Getahun, an Ethiopian who lives in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya and who has made tens of thousands of dollars in just a few years. not by chasing after his fellow human beings, but by helping to satisfy their basic needs. At that time, Mesfin wanted to emigrate to the USA. I hope he made it; I think he would be an asset to any nation that accepts him.

If Greta is to help poor people buy vaccines instead of cheering for the United Nations sanctioned theft, she should urge people in poor countries to use all of George Washington against the bullying thieves who keep them poor. Use the money accumulated in kleptocrats’ offshore bank accounts to meet the health needs of poor countries. Let people in rich countries who have worked hard for their money keep what they deserve – including the right to get a vaccine paid for through their taxes.

Maybe Greta would know all this if she had gone to school a little more.
