“[The Paris agreement] is really a scam, a fake…. They’re just worthless words.” ( – James Hansen, below)
COP30, a kind of CO2 festival, is failing. Major issuers did not appear. According to Climate Tracker, virtually all nations and regions are in serious violation of the goals of the Paris Agreement, and the gap is widening. The new pitch is less about emissions and more about the fantasy of cheap wind and solar power and batteries ushering in a new energy age. But the energy transition has been downgraded to energy addition (Daniel Yergin) and now to energy doubling. Think about rising energy prices due to climate policy…
Hansen about Paris
James Hansen is a realist when it comes to the United Nations negotiations on global warming; wind and solar energy; and the lobby madness around the topic. His statements should be remembered as the Paris Climate Agreement, the successor to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, turns 10 this month.
In an interview with The Guardian in late 2015, the father of the climate alarm shocked the jubilant Progressive Left with this post-COP21 ruling:
[The Paris agreement] is actually a scam, a fake. It’s just nonsense when they say: “We’re going to have a 2°C warming target and then try to do a little better every five years.” They are simply worthless words. There are no measures, only promises. As long as fossil fuels appear to be the cheapest on the market, they will continue to be burned.
Continue with these statements from Hansen from the same year:
Watch what’s happening in Paris carefully to see if leaders do nothing other than sign off on the plan put together by UN bureaucrats, the forbearances and promises to reduce future emissions, and then pat each other on the back and proclaim success.
Big Green is comprised of several “environmental” organizations, including the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), each with a budget of over $100 million, each growing from high-minded, utilitarian beginnings, and each with more high-priced lawyers than you can shake a stick at. EDF …was the chief architect of the disastrous Kyoto Lemon. NRDC proudly claims credit for Obama’s EPA strategy and foolishly moves it to Paris.
Other Hansen views
In previous posts, I’ve noted Hansen’s recalcitrance to cap-and-trade, whether federal, state (California), or out-of-state (Australia or Quebec/Ontario). He also criticized Copenhagen (COP20) for its interest in cap-and-trade. The same goes for the Paris Agreement, Obama’s most important climate achievement.
Hansen wants a global carbon tax, complete with “border adjustments” (tariffs per country) to prevent “leakage.” Great opportunity. He knows that wind and solar energy are too problematic and unscalable, as are nuclear fission plants (which he supports). He explained: “To claim that renewable energy will enable us in the United States, China, India or the world to quickly phase out fossil fuels is almost like believing in the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.”
Hansen’s doomism
The father of the climate alarm will not back down from his outlandish, completely bad predictions about human impact on the climate. CO2 fertilization is neglected and anthropogenic warming is not divided into positive, harmless and negative in order to determine a real indicator.
For Hansen, the world is burning because of the increased greenhouse effect (what Michael “Climategate” Mann calls Doomerism). In 2006, Hansen issued this ultimatum:
We have a maximum of ten years – not ten years to decide on measures, but ten years to fundamentally change the trend in global greenhouse gas emissions.
Well, a decade later, the die has certainly been cast as adaptation is the order of the day. But no…. Consider this 2023 update from Hansen in The Guardian[“‘We’redamnfools’:Scientistswhosoundedclimatealarmsinthe’80swarnofworsethingstocome”(July192023)OliverMilmanbegan:[“’WeareDamnedfools’:ScientistWhoSoundedClimateAlarmin80sWarnsofWorsetoCome”(July192023)OliverMilmanbegan:[„‚WirsindverdammteNarren‘:Wissenschaftlerderinden80erJahrenKlimaalarmauslöstewarntvorSchlimmerem“(19Juli2023)OliverMilmanbegann:[“‘WeareDamnedfools’:ScientistWhoSoundedClimateAlarmin80sWarnsofWorsetoCome”(July192023)OliverMilmanbegan:
According to James Hansen, the US scientist who alerted the world to the greenhouse effect in the 1980s, the world is heading towards a superheated climate not seen in the last 1 million years, before the existence of humans, because “we are damn fools” for not heeding warnings about the climate crisis.
Hansen is then quoted:
There is much more in the pipeline unless we reduce greenhouse gas levels. These superstorms are a foretaste of the storms my grandchildren will experience. We are consciously heading towards the new reality – we knew it was coming… It means we’re fucking fools. We have to taste it to believe it.
And further:
Things will get worse before they get better. This does not mean that the extreme heat in a particular location will occur again this year and will increase every year. Weather fluctuations move things around. But the global average temperature will rise and the climate cube will face increasing stress, including more extreme events.
And the doomism dance continues….
