The Trump administration should immediately exclude America from the ridiculous UN airline carbon offset program called “CORSIA.”
The clock is ticking!
As CFACT travels to Brazil for COP 30, the largest and most dangerous UN climate conference of the year, we call on the Trump administration to finish its job and rid America of all useless redistribution programs created in the name of climate.
Forcing you to pay more to “offset” your airline’s emissions on every international flight does absolutely nothing to lower the Earth’s temperature. It is enough to line the pockets of those who want to make money.
President Obama urged the United States into the United Nations Carbon Offset and Reduction Program for International Aviation (CORSIA) after the 39th International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly in Montreal in 2016.
CORSIA seeks to reduce carbon emissions from international flights by requiring airlines to offset their emissions above a certain threshold by purchasing approved carbon credits.
The United States is currently participating in the “voluntary” phase of CORSIA through 2026. The system will become “mandatory” in 2027.
CORSIA costs you every time you fly internationally. Experience tells us that the costs of offset printing in air transport will continue to rise if nothing is done about it. Airlines are even threatened with a “bottleneck” in CO2 compensation, which will lead to upward pressure on tariffs.
China is not paying as expected despite carrying 59.3 million passengers in 2024.
We can expect the airline industry to have mixed opinions about exiting CORSIA.
Many industry insiders thought forcing airlines to buy carbon offsets was the lesser evil as they faced potentially far more costly programs. CORSIA kept airlines out of direct regulation under the Paris Climate Agreement. CORSIA critics, both left and right, rarely agree that the system is seen as a cover for corporate “greenwashing.”
However, shortly after taking office, President Trump initiated the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. This, coupled with increasing acceptance of the fact that offsets are not an effective method of reducing carbon emissions, makes the case for exiting CORSIA easy to understand.
Ideally, President Trump would have included withdrawal from CORSIA in his January 20, 2025 executive order entitled “Putting America First in International Environmental Agreements.” The Secretary of Transportation would then have informed the UN that America would be leaving CORSIA before June 30, 2025.
Minister Sean Duffy should inform the UN that America is withdrawing from CORSIA now, before the system’s “mandatory” balancing phase begins in 2027.
One can argue legally that America missed its chance to withdraw; However, CORSIA does not contain an international enforcement mechanism. If American airlines stop reporting their emissions and paying compensation under the system, we are effectively out.
The United Nations International Aviation Carbon Offset and Reduction Program is a costly, wasteful and ineffective climate program that only a UN bureaucrat or climate profiteer could love.
CFACT advises President Trump to direct Secretary Duffy and all relevant officials to withdraw the United States from this UN airline carbon offset program without further delay.
