The trade advisor of US President Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, asked India on Monday to buy the purchase of Russian crude oil, and accused the Asian giant to undermine the international efforts to insulate Vladimir Putin's war economy.
In the Financial Times, Navarro's dependence on Russian oil wrote as “opportunistic”. If India “wants to be treated as a strategic partner of the United States, it has to act like one.”
“In fact, India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil and transforms into high-quality exports and gives Moscow the dollars it needs,” said Navarro in the operating room.
His comments come shortly after the trade negotiations between the United States and India, which were to take place in Neu -Delhi later this month.
The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the office of the US sales representative did not immediately respond immediately to CNBC's request.
At the beginning of this month, the Trump government said that it intends to impose an additional 25% tariff for Russian oil purchases and to bring the total levies against the country to 50%. The cumulative duties in India is one of the highest of the trading partners in Washington.
At that time, India described the move as “extremely unhappy” and said that the tariffs were “unfair, unjustified and inappropriate”.
Since then, the White House has warned that the secondary taxes in India could continue to increase peace talks with Putin depending on the outcome of Trump's talks.
India has reported that since Moscow it has been dealing with Russia since Moscow in Ukraine in Ukraine in Ukraine in Ukraine in Ukraine since Moscow.
In an explanation published on August 4, the Indian Foreign Ministry for Outer Affairs said that the country had started importing Russian because traditional supplies were derived from Europe after the conflict outbreak.
“India imports should ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumer. They are a necessity forced by the global market situation,” said the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
“However, it shows that the nations that criticize India are lending themselves in the trade in Russia. In contrast to our case, such a trade is not even an important national compulsion,” added.
Trump's criticism of the oil trade in India with Russia is a clear change from the Biden government, which together with other G7 nations, Australia and the European Union, founded a price limit of $ 60 per barrel price at the end of 2022. Since then, the EU has signaled that it has reached an agreement to reduce the price threshold.
This mechanism wanted to restrict Russia's sales by selling the oil and at the same time maintain the stability of the global energy markets.
Shilan Shah, deputy chief -reconomist economy in capital economy, said that India can basically find other suppliers than Russia in order to “relatively easy” to cover its energy needs with limited economic effects.
“But we doubt that India would make a full effort to ward off from Russian oil. In Germany it would not play well to visit Trump's demands,” said Shah in a note published on August 4.
“In addition, Indian political decision -makers would not usually build up the generally warm (and long -term) relationships with Russia,” he added.
