The Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change aims to strengthen support for urgent climate action at a time when scientists warn the world is running out of time.
Announced at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, the initiative is a committed multilateral collaboration between states and international organizations to fund research and action to promote information integrity on climate issues.

Aiming to expand the scope and breadth of research on climate disinformation and its impacts, evidence is collected from around the world to inform and strengthen strategic action, advocacy and communication.
The initiative responds to the commitment in the Global Digital Compact adopted by United Nations member states at the Future Summit in September 2024, which encourages UN bodies to assess the impact of misinformation and disinformation in collaboration with governments and relevant stakeholders the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The initiative will establish a Global Fund to finance connected, in-depth research that will help uncover and eliminate disinformation related to climate change and socialize the results of the research. The fund is managed and implemented by UNESCO and is structured as a multi-partner trust fund.
The initiative will support and strengthen existing climate change communication campaigns to curb and combat climate change disinformation, particularly in the run-up to the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), to be held in Brazil in November 2025. About In addition, it will support ongoing advocacy and communications to strengthen the integrity of information environments worldwide and work to garner support from civil society and academic groups worldwide.
Participants in the initiative include UN member states (Chile, Denmark, France, Morocco, Sweden and the United Kingdom have confirmed their participation), UN agencies (UN Climate Change, World Meteorological Organization) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development ( OECD) and representatives of civil society.

“Verified for climate”
One of the key efforts in the fight against climate disinformation is Verified for Climate, a joint initiative of the United Nations and social impact agency Purpose that promotes solutions-oriented, science-based information to debunk myths and end the narratives of Denial, doom and delay.
Originally launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Verified is a global communications infrastructure dedicated to addressing the most pressing and emerging challenges of misinformation and disinformation around the world.
Verified for Climate is based on a three-pillar approach: trusted messenger and community engagement to engage and persuade local audiences; global creative campaigns to reach target groups en masse and make the issue visible; and meetings that focus on insights from climate communications experts and leverage solutions to advance global collaboration.
