According to a Wall Street Journal report, President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating Kevin Warsh as Treasury secretary and then ultimately firing him as chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Warsh, himself a former Fed governor, would move to the central bank after current Chairman Jerome Powell's term expires in 2026, according to the Journal, which cited sources familiar with Trump's thinking.

The speculation is that the Treasury Department is the last major Cabinet post for which Trump has not yet announced his intention.

Various reports have listed Warsh as one of the finalists along with Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan and hedge fund manager Scott Bessent. Possible scenarios include Bessent first heading the National Economic Council and then moving to the Treasury Department after Warsh takes over as head of the Fed.

However, Trump is known for his propensity to change his mind and the report states that no final decision has been made yet.

“President-elect Trump is making decisions about who will serve in his second administration,” Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “He will continue to communicate those decisions as they are made.”
