AEMO boss avoids endorsing authorities assure that renewables will drive down vitality costs – do you agree?

Essay by Eric Worrall

The Australian Energy Market Operator, the industry body tasked with overseeing electricity supplies on Australia's east coast, has stopped short of supporting the Australian government's claim that renewable energy will drive down prices.

The full video is worth watching. The commentators explain in detail why renewable energy is the most expensive form of energy and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

The man in the screenshot above is Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen, who continues to claim that if you spend enough money on renewable energy, prices will fall – a view apparently not shared by the head of the Australian Energy Market Operator, Daniel Westerman.

The senator who pressed AEMO boss Daniel Westerman to give a clear answer on whether he supports the view that renewables will drive down prices was LNP federal senator Matt Canavan, with whom I spoke at the recent Australian CPAC conference spoke personally. Matt Canavan and my local MP Keith Pitt appear to be committed to bringing a sensible discussion about coal back into mainstream Australian politics.
