Climate change: Trump’s Paris withdrawal was “ruthless” – John Kerry

The US special envoy on climate change, John Kerry, said the country would now press for swift action after four years of “reckless behavior” under Donald Trump.
Mr Kerry said the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement threatened the future of people around the world.
One of President Biden’s first actions after his inauguration was to reapply to join the Climate Pact.
Mr Kerry said the US would now move forward with “humility and ambition”.
And this year’s climate change meeting in Glasgow is the “last and most important opportunity” to make progress, he said.

In order to get to zero net emissions by the middle of the century, the world must phase out coal five times faster than in recent years. Net zero means that remaining greenhouse gas emissions are offset by removing an appropriate amount from the atmosphere, for example by planting trees.
Renewable energies would have to be ramped up six times faster and the transition to electric vehicles would have to be 22 times faster than at present.

So my plea to everyone is that we have to achieve a much faster path of decarbonization, that is feasible. “

No doubt China will decide that reducing coal use is more important than its plans for global coal-fired belt and road dominance after John Kerry speaks seriously with them.
