Facebook announced on Monday that it would be removing “Stop the Steal” content in advance of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20th.

Facebook previously removed a “Stop the Steal” group from its services in November and has since removed various other related groups and pages. However, the company announced that it took this extra step after the US Capitol riot last week.

“With the continued attempts to organize events against the US presidential election result that may lead to violence and the use of the term by those involved in Wednesday’s violence in DC, we are taking this additional step in advance of the Inauguration. “Said the company in a blog post.

Facebook said it plans to treat the next two weeks as a major civil event and stop any misinformation or content that could spark further violence.

The company plans to stream the inauguration live on the Facebook News section of its app and website. After the inauguration, posts that attempt to delegitimize the election will be put on labels stating that Biden is the sitting US president.

The company said it will also maintain its hiatus on political ads in the US

The announcements come after Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said earlier Monday that the uprising at the US Capitol was not “largely” organized on behalf of the social media company. Last week, Facebook prevented Trump from posting for at least the rest of his term in office.
