An excellent achievement for an athlete who stays fit into old age.
Brian Winslow, also known as ‘Britain’s oldest weightlifter’, brings added meaning to the adage ‘age is just a number’. In terms of strength, it seems anyone of any age can push themselves in the gym. Wilson’s feat is the latest example of veteran powerlifting peers demonstrating unexpected ability.
During the 2023 British Drug-Free Powerlifting Championships on March 18, 86-year-old Winslow a 77.5 kilograms (170.8 pounds) raw deadlift. The train mark is a record in the men’s 60-kilogram weight class in the 85-89 age group. Winslow appeared to have only adorned a sling for his milestone. The success and story were noted on BBC News’ Instagram page, where they also received clarifying comments from the athlete.
More from Breaking Muscle:
Winslow had such a productive meeting that he actually broke the world men’s 60 kg record aged 85-89 on his first attempt when he deadlifted 75 kilograms (165 pounds). He would then follow that move by placing 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) on his loaded barbell to further build the record.
“I keep going as long as my body allows.”
At the time of writing, Winslow does not appear to have any online database documenting his past powerlifting accomplishments.
This makes it relatively difficult to compare his most recent performance to previous strength markers to provide context for how he has progressed throughout his strength training career. Winslow also doesn’t seem to have a significant social media presence at the time of writing, making it unclear how he prepared for this deadlift milestone or how he usually trains.
After all, the athlete seemed quite appreciative in his comments to BBC News. He might even throw in a little joke to lighten the mood after breaking new ground in powerlifting.
“It’s always great to get a record or two,” explained Winslow. “I was exhausted right after, but okay.”

Except where noted, Winslow seems to continue to rush forward, making incredible displays of power and strength. As an iconic author, Mark Twain once said, “Age is a matter of spirit, not matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
The same sentiments apply to Winslow’s ongoing powerlifting ambitions.
