Pope Francis was operated on Sunday in a Roman hospital for an abnormal narrowing of his colon, the Vatican said.
The 84-year-old Francis had “responded well to the operation,” said Matteo Bruni, head of the Holy See’s press office, in a statement.
The operation in the A. Gemelli Polyclinic was performed under general anesthesia by Dr. Sergio Alifieri performed.
Bruni announced yesterday that the Pope would undergo “planned surgery for symptomatic diverticulum stenosis of the large intestine”.
Stenosis is an abnormal narrowing.

The announcement that Francis would be entering the hospital came just hours after the Pope made a public appearance in front of the crowds in St.
A week ago, at the same regular appearance there, Francis asked the people for special prayers for themselves. During the same event, he announced that he would be visiting Hungary and Slovakia in September.
The Argentine-born Roman Catholic Pope was elected America’s first Pope in February 2013.
He succeeded Benedict XVI, who was born in Germany. who retired for reasons of age.
